Nerjan Development Company was incorporated on January 4th 1969. The family owned business started in the basement of the Zizzi family home in Riverside CT in 1953. The Zizzi's had traveled from Italy to West Virginia to work in the coal mines, and eventually moved north to Connecticut to permanently settle in the Town of Greenwich in the Cos Cob and Riverside areas. Frank, a veteran of WWII, worked at Reflectone Inc., an aircraft simulator manufacturer based in Stamford, Connecticut. During the evenings, he would do machining in the basement of the family home, teaching his three sons the craft of manual precision machining on Bridgeports and manual lathes. His youngest son Blake began learning machining at the age of 12. Frank retired after working 28 years at Reflectone, and expanded the home based business. In 1976, Frank and his wife Nerva purchased the 3300 square foot building at 101 West Avenue, where the business is still located today. Much has changed over the past 42 years. Blake, the youngest of the four children became an employee while a teenager, working during high school, leaving only to attend a year of college in California. Upon his return he completed his Technology Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Norwalk State Technical College. Today, he manages the complete operation as company President.
The material and machines used in production machining have changed greatly. From doing simple machine components made of steel and aluminum on manual milling machines and lathes, the business now has five large CNC machining centers, running such diverse materials as aluminum, stainless steel, Invar, titanium and assorted plastics.
The customer base has expanded to include the electro-mechanical, aerospace, medical, microwave, microlithography and high-end music industries. In 2002 the company pursued and was certified for ISO-9000/1994. Since then, Nerjan has been certified to AS9100 REV. B/ISO 9001:2008. The current Certificate #TRC 000472 issued by The Registrar Company of Dallas, Texas, expires on August 5, 2013.
Blake's wife Cynthia joined the company in 1982 to do the manual accounting and payroll functions. One of the additional changes made over the years has been to computerize the bookkeeping and job tracking systems. The bookkeeping component runs on Quickbooks Pro, and since 2000, the company has been using the Shoptech E2 job tracking system.
The company has maintained a competitive edge by
1. Changing with market requirements
2. Constantly upgrading machining facility
3. Developing quality procedures
4. Training its own employees in quality oriented manufacturing processes
